I love this model, I really do. Honestly he is one of the models that helped seal the deal for me wanting to start playing Trolls. Eventually I will get the whole army painted so I can start playing them. This model is one of the models that I want to put into my portfolio so he got painted up a little ahead of the rest of the army. But he really looks good. And with the help of a really good friend I was able to try something a little different on the spines on his back. Well something I had not planned on doing because I did not have the paint and my Airbrush was under the weather. But with a fresh batch of Minitaire paints from Badger and a few parts to help my my Iwata airbrush limp along for a little bit longer I was able to produce a nice fade/glow effect on those spines.

I could not help myself... I just had to paint up a Troll. This army has been sitting and waiting for me to sell my Circle before I could start on it. Well since I sold the Circle last week I decided to start with this model. Now I picked one of these up in a trade but it was not done up the best like none of the gaps were filled and it still had mold lines everywhere. So I set out do do one up from the start to (a) see how hard it is to clean up and assemble one of these, and (b) to show how much better things look when they are actually cleaned up and gap filled.

Now I know I have some touch ups that I need to do because of some overpainting but I will get to those shortly... like when I paint up the next troll model cause I will have to mix up the flesh tones for some of them.

Now if any of you have ever worked with the plastic heavy warbeast kit for the Trollbloods you will know how bad the gaps are around the piece that the back quills are part of, and if you look closely you can tell that I spent a fair amount of time filling those buggars in.

I will get a comparison post put up this weekend between the one that I did and the one that I picked up in trade.

It has been a long couple of days here in the studio. Had a modelers meeting on Friday night with the local IPMS chapter about a couple of events coming up one of which being the local event Con Air 2013. So I am going to be participating in that as well some other stuff coming up too.

Now... painting... yeah I have been trying to get these Champions finished up so that they will be ready to mail out the first of the week. I am glad to have them all finished up so I can get them sent back to the client. I truly hope he enjoys the work that I have put into the models.

Got kind of a later start in the studio today so I didn't get as much done painting wise as I had wanted to but I am still on my original Schedule for these models. I only have the three Trollkin Champions left and I see them moving very quickly off the table. So on to the picture show...

Man I was busy in the studio today. I managed to finish up the Pyre Troll and I also managed to get Borka Kegslayer finished up. I think next up I am going to tackle Doomshaper and then the Trollkin Champions. Just have to wait and see... but for now... pictures of Borka.

So I managed to catch an early start in the studio today so I finished up the Pyre Troll and I am now about to start on another troll... though I am not sure which one I want to start yet. All of the trolls are going to have a greyish skin tone cause thats what the client wanted... and really I think it looks pretty good.

Now... the fire... this is another first for me. Normally I prefer to work from dark to light working in layers to build highlights. This one I worked backwards... I started out with coating the areas to be fire using Menoth White Highlight from the P3 range. Then I applied 2 coats of Sunshine wash from Secret Weapon Miniatures (see Justin you get 2 plugs on this one). Then I went through and used some of my Reaper Master Series paints. Starting with Fire Orange, then Phoenix Red, and finally Fire Red. Really to me it doesn't seem natural to work in that order but I like the results.

After all the paint work was competed I mounted him on one of those Rocky Bluff Bases that I showed in that last post.

I just want to throw out a thank you to Mr. Justin for coming out with such awesome products. Keep up the great work sir.

Well here we are officially day one of painting the next project and I figured I would post up where I am at since we have reached the end of the day.

I got all 6 of the bases painted that I needed for this project. You may recognize them... they are the Rocky Bluff bases from Secret Weapon Miniatures that I used on my Khador and wrote a review for them a while back. Obviously I can't say enough good things about these bases. And its obvious that my clients like them too since they chose them for their Trollbloods.

So I got those bases done and I decided I wanted to start with the Pyre Troll for this project. I know normally when I paint a small battlegroup I generally start with the Warlock or Warcaster. Well I chose to start here cause one... I love this model... and two... its the old metal one and not the new plastic one. And finally three... I was excited to try a couple new tricks I have learned especially on the flames. So this is where I decided to stop for the night. I got the skin most of the way done and I got the first coat of the yellow on the hands and the fireball.

Okay this post has been a long time coming and I have been meaning to get some good pictures of this for a while now... but things have been a little crazy since returning from Adepticon back in April that when I had time to get these pictures taken and posted I wasn't thinking about it and when I was thinking about it I didn't have time to because I was in the middle of a big important project.

So with no more delay in things here are the pictures of one of my first ever pieces that I painted strictly for a competition and actually entered... there have been others of course but I felt they were not as strong as the two that I did enter. I will try to get final pictures up of the Bloodthirster later this week.
